Which Walking Boots Are Best For Wide Feet? (Perfect for Bunions)

Ain’t no boot that’s wide enough to fit on your fooooooot (sing it with me).

By using our guide to find out which walking boots are best for wide feet, the above statement will never be true again and you’re in for a much better hiking experience.

It’s time that you enjoyed the comfort you deserve.

We’ve been busy hiking the Scottish trails, the coastal trails in the South of England, and some of the most beautiful paths in the UK with 20 of the top walking boots on the market. We’ve put countless hours into this, determining which are the best for reliability and durability.

What was the point in us doing this?

We know how difficult it is to find boots for wide feet (trust me, I’ve been there). You want walking boots that are comfortable, DURABLE, and offer you protection from the elements as well as debris.

Overall, we picked the Merrell Moab for Men as our winner. They have everything you need to hike comfortably with wide feet, and a little more.

You might not agree, and we get that, which is why we have another six fantastic options (for men and women) for you to browse through.

Of course, they also suit wide feet – offering a comfy interior with more than enough space for those who need it. The reinforced toe cap offers additional protection while you are out and about. Easy to slide on and off, you’ll be happy you picked these.

What we really loved is the fact that these walking boots come with good ankle support. They are there to provide additional protection to try and stop your ankle from rolling if you slip or stumble. The high lacing also keeps them more watertight.

This complements the GORE-TEX leather membrane perfectly, which offers solid waterproofing and is one of the most efficient on the market as well as the easiest to maintain. At the same time, it allows for excellent ventilation to keep your feet breathing while you hike.

They offer exceptional comfort, with a wide fit that will cater to pretty much any foot that needs it. The soft inner lining means that your feet are cushioned nicely, and you will find that this model has great arch support for those that need it.

One thing to note, if you’re looking for waterproof hiking shoes these are not the ones you need. It’s better to stick with the Moab 2 above. However, we love that these are ideal for long walks and casual hiking in the warm summer and autumn months.

The vibram sole isn’t just fancy, it also helps to absorb shocks to protect your feet and spine from potential harm on impact. It has a thick tread that will ensure you aren’t left falling over every five seconds when you hit that difficult terrain (we’ve all been there).

We all like a solid toe cap, and these boots from Merrell certainly bring that to the table. It’s great for protecting you from falling debris and injuries when you hit your feet. There is also a closed-cell foam tongue that will help keep moisture and debris out.

They are completely breathable as well, offering solid ventilation that will allow you to go on long walks and hikes without any risk of your feet becoming sweaty. That means you can say farewell to a potential athlete’s foot, something that no hiker likes to deal with.

One thing we love about these boots is the fact that you get to choose from two really bold and cool styles. They are also really comfortable, allowing those with wide feet to slide in neatly and enjoy a fit that keeps your feet secure while also offering plenty of protection.

You won’t find a toe cap on these like you do with the Merrell’s, but they are still nice and sturdy for those outdoor adventures. The sole is thick, which means you get plenty of protection from sharp debris and rocks while also being kept upright if you end up slipping.

These boots aren’t waterproof, and we would recommend the Merrell models if you are looking for a pair that are. However, these are the perfect ladies walking boots for long walks and casual hikes that take place in the dry summer months when there is no risk of rain.

Made from suede, they offer comfort and style as well as two design choices so that you have freedom of expression. The heel and toe bumpers also provide additional protection while boosting durability so that your shoes last for longer.

Key Features For Buying Wide Walking Boots

Before you buy, there are a few things you need to keep in mind. After all, you want the best boots possible to keep your feet comfortable and supported.

The Fit. You have to make sure that you get the right fit for your feet. Now, it’s true that they might feel a little snug at first as you break them in and the material widens, but if your foot or toes feel squished in any way then you need to opt for a different size

The Sole. Your feet should never hang over the sole. While the uppers will widen with time or work (we have a guide for that here), the sole will never change. The balls of your feet should cover the surface of the sole without going over the edge of it.

The Terrain. Consider the type of walking that you are doing. Long and regular hikes on uneven terrain and exciting trails will require boots that can really take a beating. If you’re only heading out on casual walks on even terrain, then you can stick with less specialised boots.

The Support. You will need a sole that has excellent grip and tread for the uneven paths and unpredictable terrain, but you should also opt for a boot that provides good ankle and foot support. They can’t prevent ankle injuries, but they can offer additional protection

The Ventilation. Breathable boots are key, especially on those really long trails that you know are going to give you a workout. The last thing you want is to be covered in sweat while you hike, so pick up a pair that’s going to offer you a ventilated fit.

The Protection. Waterproofing is important for the intrepid hiker, and if you are heading on the serious trails you can’t go without waterproof boots. GORE-TEX is the best way to go and the most reliable and the easiest to maintain over time.

Final Thoughts

Wide feet don’t always have to be difficult to shop for, and we hope this guide has been able to help you find your perfect hiking companion. There are loads of great options, but if we had to choose it would be the Merrell Moab and Regatta Holcombe that take the crown.

Both boots are beautifully crafted and designed for hiking, and while the Holcombe is more affordable than the Moab they are both equally excellent when it comes to waterproofing and reliability. Thick soles offer great protection that will keep you going for miles.
