Buying Guide

Why Would You Need a Lightweight Sleeping Bag?

Lightweight sleeping bags are, well, lighter than most. They are easier to carry around when you are hiking because they don’t weigh down on you as much, and they are also better for rolling into a tight sausage for compact storage. They are ideal for warmer weather because the light models don’t tend to have a great deal of padding in them, so you won’t sweat while you sleep.

I would advise against using them in cold weather because they are unlikely to keep you warm enough; especially when there is frost and snow. There are some models that have been specially designed to be lighter and amazing at retaining heat, but these are uncommon and also tend to cost a good deal more than a standard winter sleeping bag.

What About the Season Rating?

The season rating is very important, because it tells you the conditions that your sleeping bag can be used in. There are four seasons, although you may see a fifth around from time to time, and you can find out more about each below:

Season 1: Summer and indoor camping.

Season 2: Late spring and early autumn camping

Season 3: Mild autumn and winter camping; no frost

Season 4: Cold winter nights with frost

Season 5: Cold winter nights with frost and snow, dipping below 0

What are the Different Types of Sleeping Bag?

In addition to the season rating, you also have sleeping bag types. This is an important consideration because they all serve different purposes when you are out camping. Take a look, and you’ll see what I mean:

  • Square. These are also known as rectangular sleeping bags. They are spacious, comfortable, and leave plenty of room for your feet and body to move around while sleeping. You will find that double sleeping bags are most commonly made in this design.
  • Mummy. This comes with a hood to keep the cold away from your head, and also make things more comfortable. The feet are tapered to trap more heat in, and the design is narrow for extra warmth.
  • Pods. These are like Corish pasties. They are wide, but also have the comfort and security provided by the mummy sleeping bag. They are exceptionally comfortable, and still, provide you with the chance to move around if you want to.
  • Women’s. These actually have a specific design that is different from a standard sleeping bag. Why? Well, women have been shown to sleep colder than men. Therefore, these have more insulation and the areas around the hips and feet are specially designed to retain heat.

Things to Consider

In addition to everything I have talked about above, there are a few other things that you might want to take into consideration before you buy. For me, these are features that really matter when I am picking out a sleeping bag, and they will likely be the same for you.

The Temperature Ratings

This is different from the season rating because it refers to the temperatures it can withstand. You will find that there is a comfort rating and an extreme rating on the sleeping bag carrier, and these are detrimental for a good night’s sleep. The comfort rating is the temperature ratings at which you will still remain nice and cosy without feeling the cold. The extreme rating is where you will still be protected, but you might get a little chill, and it cannot cope with anything lower than that.

The Inner Lining

This is the material that will be against your skin, or your sleeping clothes. Most of the time, it is made from nylon or polyester, and these materials are comfortable as well as warm. You may also find flannel and cotton, but I would recommend staying away from the latter in cold conditions as it traps moisture and you are likely to get quite damp quickly.

The Outer Fabric

I have two favoured materials for this part. Dryloft is water resistant and breathable, making it comfortable to sleep in and giving you less to worry about if there is a minor leak in the tent. Nylon ripstop is tough and durable, so it can handle pretty much anything you throw at it. It’s the ideal model for expeditions where resistance to wear and tear is paramount.

Left- and Right-Hand Zips

These are really useful, and you can’t tell me otherwise. Having people who are both left and righthanded in my family, I have seen the benefits of these zips up close. All you need to do is remember the following;

  • Left Hand Zip for Righthanded People
  • Right Hand Zip for Left-Handed People
Two-Way Zips and Covers

These are perfect for ventilation, which is great when you are camping in warmer weather and starting to feel a little warm in the bag. However, there are some zips that prevent heat loss for those camping in colder climates; giving everyone something. The zip cover is another handy feature that prevents it from coming undone while you sleep, so you remain nice and secure.

A mummy sleeping bag, and some pod sleeping bags, come with hoods. These are secured around your face so that your ears and most of your head are covered. While very comfortable, it is also there to ensure that you stay warm throughout the night. Cold conditions can make your ears hurt, and your head loses heat pretty quickly, so a hood is a fantastic way to trap it all inside.

This is the space between the outer and inner linings. It is filled with material that will keep you warm while you sleep. Most of the time, it is filled with a synthetic material, and this does the job well in most climates. You will likely find that the summer sleeping bags are lighter because they are filled with less material than the winter models.

Interestingly, if you select a down filling, it will be lighter than the synthetics. However, down is only recommended for winter camping because it keeps you exceptionally warm (as well as comfortable). Down is also more expensive than synthetics, but if you are looking for a lightweight sleeping bag, this could be just what you needed.

Inner Pockets

I love inner pockets, and for good reason; they keep everything safe. Whether you are at a festival or you are camping in the great unknown, security is key. The interior pockets hold your wallet, phone, camera, and any other valuables that you might have. That way, they are always on your person so that you know where they are. It doesn’t matter who you are with or where, you should always keep your valuables close to you.

To Conclude

Hopefully, this guide has helped you to find the best sleeping bag on the market, and one that will suit you perfectly on your next trip. Of course, it’s difficult to choose a favourite, as each of these models has different features.

However, we can promise you that you will discover a model that is within your budget and fits perfectly with your needs. Whether you want a sleeping bag that can battle every season, or one that will get you through the summer months, we have one here that won’t leave you disappointed.
