Buyers Guide

How to buy the best Petrol Strimmer

Keeping verges and edges neat with a mower can be impossible, but where do you even begin when it comes to buying a petrol strimmer? What type of grass are you cutting? What size blades does your strimmer need to have? This guide will help you buy the best Petrol Strimmer for your garden.

Whilst many of us associate the Petrol Strimmer with roadsides and council workers, they can become an asset to the gardener who needs to keep verges and edges neat and tidy or maybe just has a large area of over grass to keep tidy. Before buying a petrol strimmer you first need to establish why you need a strimmer and what you are going to use it for.

  • How large is the area that you need to use it on? If the area is only very small is it
worth investing in a larger piece of machinery like this?
  • Is it just grass that you are cutting? Or are there thick plants and grasses that will
    require a larger machine.
  • Are you able to hold it for the time you need to use it? Petrol strimmers are
naturally heavier, so do you really need this or would a lighter, smaller type be
    better?

This guide will help you find the right Petrol Strimmer for the job or identify whether you really need one or not.

What are you using your Strimmer for?

Mowing or Edging:

This is where the Strimmer is used to tidy edges of gardens or paths or used to trim smaller patches of grass. Using a strimmer instead of a mower when you have many small patches of grass to trim makes the job so much easier than constantly using a mower, and if you have many small areas that are spread out, using a strimmer makes a lot more sense.

Edging is a technique used to keep path edges and garden edges neat and tidy. Strimmers are particularly good for this job as they reach the difficult angles that a lawnmower would struggle to gut neatly and effectively.

Trimming and Tapering:

This technique is used by people who have objects that they need to mow around to keep neat and tidy, Using the strimmer for this is much more effective than using a mower, as you can move the blades around objects and get closer to them without worrying about damaging your equipment or your garden ornaments. The strimmer is particularly useful because it is so much easier to manoeuvre than a mower, and there are no chords to worry about as well.

Weeding:

Whilst many would think a strimmer would not be useful when it comes to paved gardens, you can still use a strimmer to keep those weeds down. The strimmer can be used quickly and effectively to weed between paving slabs, keeping them neat and tidy and saving the users back. The petrol strimmer is going to be really helpful to those with large areas of paved garden, or someone who has grass and patio
areas to keep tidy because you only need one piece of equipment, and a lot less time.

Scything:

If you have a large area of untamed grasses and plants, removing them would be impossible with a lawn mower, but with a petrol strimmer, you will be able to get rid of it in no time. Scything is the process of clearing large areas of overgrown grasses, and this is where a piece of machinery like a petrol strimmer becomes perfect. It is powerful enough to cut through heavy grasses, and you can still use it to maintain the area afterwards.

Safety Aspects to Consider:

This piece of machinery is not only heavy duty but without proper care and attention, it can cause serious injury. It is important to remember that if you decide to purchase a petrol strimmer, there are extra safety precautions that you need to take.

1. Make sure you have the correct protective gear: This isn't just gloves and protective goggles. Petrol strimmers also emit fumes that can be harmful, so make sure you purchase a protective mask to keep yourself from inhaling these harmful fumes. You will also need to think about the noise the strimmer makes, it will be loud and you may require ear protection when working.

2. Be Aware of what is going on around you: This piece of machinery is heavy,
dangerous and loud. Always be aware of what is going on around you, especially if
there are children or animals nearby. Make sure that family members or friends
know that you are working in the garden with a loud and possibly dangerous piece
of machinery and be aware of people approaching you whilst you are working.

3. Be conscious of the petrol: This is of major importance with Petrol Strimmers. Unlike electric or corded strimmer's, the petrol will give off carbon monoxide fumes, which can be dangerous in small or enclosed spaces. Also, remember to store this piece of machinery away from anything that could start or cause a fire.

4. Take regular breaks: This piece of machinery is heavy, but also requires
concentration. If you start to become fatigued you can lose concentration and this
could result in injury. Make sure that you are feeling well and fit when using a
strimmer like this, and if you take any regular medications, check with your doctor or pharmacist whether they could alter your concentration levels and make working
with a piece of kit like this dangerous.

How much are you going to need to spend?

You are going to have to spend a decent amount of money on this piece of machinery. It is an investment and one that you need to make sure that this is something that is going to be worth the money you spend and isn't going to be wasted or barely used.
Prices for these strimmer’s vary, and so does the equipment that comes with them.

For a top end piece of kit, you are going to be spending approximately £200 on your strimmer. Some, less powerful Petrol Strimmer's come in at just over £100, so make sure you know exactly what you need it for and what it's going to be cutting before you spend too much money.

Best Cordless Strimmer with Blades – Makita

This seems to be a fairly standard price for a piece of machinery like this, but you also need to take into account the price of the petrol that you will need to purchase separately as well as the safety equipment you need to have as well, which can also be expensive to buy.

Before you purchase anything to make sure you check what the strimmer does and doesn't come with as well. Some ‘kits' will include maintenance and safety equipment included with it, whilst others will simply be the petrol strimmer and that is it. Always research what you are buying, especially if you are making a serious and long-term investment.

  • David Manovitch says:

I have bought a Parker 52 cc brush cutter and after maybe 8 hours use it is now defunct! The first sign of shabby workmanship was when the silencer dropped off and revealed itself to be secured by one bolt only! The hole had not even been drilled and tapped for the other bolt!!!
