Why Buy a Large Rucksack?
You might be sat there, weighing up the pros and cons of choosing a small rucksack over a large one. Sometimes it is the better choice, and it costs a lot less, but there are other times when a bigger bag is going to work a lot better for the task at hand.
If you are off hiking, for example, a large rucksack is going to be required so that you can fit all of your gear inside.
Similarly, if you are going on holiday but do not want to bring a suitcase with you, a big bag is often the next choice. This means you can pack all of your personal belongings tightly and carry them around with you while you are travelling.
The same goes for work, as many laptops will not fit in a smaller backpack; especially if you want to put notepads and other work equipment in there too.
Things to Consider Before You Buy
Before you go ahead and buy your rucksack, however, there are some things you should be checking out first. I have a great list of considerations you should make first, helping you to create a checklist of desirable and non-desirable features.
Take a look below and see if any of these are on your list, or if there are some that should be added.
Personally, I like to have a waterproof bag wherever I go. Being English, you always expect sudden rainfall, and I think that is a useful fear to have. It is, however, all down to personal preference.
You also need to remember that waterproof and water resistant are two very different things. The former of these can be submerged in water without leaks and will keep everything inside safe.
The latter is best in light rainfall and showers, but anything more and the contents of the bag will likely end up soaked. Similarly, waterproof bags sometimes have waterproof and non-waterproof sections.
This is something you should check out carefully before you buy the bag. I am a definite advocate for fully waterproof rucksacks.
This is essential because you need to be able to carry everything. A large rucksack could be anything from 15L to well over 30L, and you have to determine how much space your items are going to take up.
Are you going for a long hiking trip, or are you just visiting another city and don’t want to take a suitcase? Carefully consider all of the items you will be taking and base the capacity on that.
My advice is to buy a bag with a little more room than you think you will need so that you are completely covered. It also means that there is space for any extras that you have forgotten about.
Plus, if you are on holiday or a city break, it is always an excellent plan to have places to put a few souvenirs that you might like to pick up from your travels.
By this, I mean what the bag is going to be used for. There are different styles and designs based on what your intentions are.
Hiking packs often come with extra straps and compartments for camping equipment, like sleeping bags, while general-purpose rucksacks have a simpler design. It’s an exceptionally useful factor to consider before you buy.
Pockets and Storage
I love pockets; they are so useful. Again, they really do depend on what you are using the backpack for.
If you need it for work and travel, additional storage inside (like organised sections and main compartment) can be really handy for storing laptops and notepads, amongst other items.
Hidden interior pockets can also be useful when hiding valuables and spare cash so that they are harder to steal.
Exterior pockets are useful in any situation, but especially for hiking. They can be used to store the items that you need quick access to; phone, wallet, snacks, and minor first aid.
There is also usually a mesh pocket for water bottles in order to make it easy to grab when you are on the trail.
Plus, many exterior pockets on hiking rucksacks are waterproof as an additional measure.
Weight and Size
The great thing here is that even if your rucksack has a frame, modern technology is so great that it will likely be very lightweight. We don’t really need to worry about material weight anymore because it does not have as big an impact on its overall weight and feel.
This means you only really need to worry about what’s going inside it. Of course, framed rucksacks are going to weigh a little more, but it is highly unlikely that you will notice it. Just pay careful attention to the weight before you buy it.
Comfort is key, and you will regret your choice if you don’t think about comfort before anything else. If you don’t select shoulder straps that are nicely padded, they will dig into your arms and cause you serious pain and discomfort the more you walk.
This isn’t a healthy way to hike or travel, and padding is soft on these areas to prevent that awful feeling from occurring. That way, you can walk further for longer.
Similarly, you should take a look at the shoulder straps with ventilation. These increase the airflow when hiking to prevent sweating and the resulting damp from collecting and becoming uncomfortable.
If your rucksack has a frame, this should also be padded so that it doesn’t dig into your back. The waist strap (hip belt) should also sit comfortably on your hip bones and not across your stomach. The latter method can cause pain and even injury over time.
We all need to carefully consider our budgets before we buy things, and rucksacks are the same as anything else. This also means the prices can vary massively, and the cost of some is actually quite shocking.
You can get a great backpack for £50, and that is where I feel some of the best models are. Any lower than that and you will certainly find a few gems, but not as many in the £50 and over section.
