What is a Double Sleeping Bag?
It’s the perfect solution for those who still want to cuddle up with each other after a long day hiking. After all, why should camping mean that you have to stop sharing a bed? They are much larger than a standard sleeping bag at double the size (or more), and offer way more space to move around and really get comfortable.
While many of them are just one big sleeping bag, there are others that can be separated to make two sleeping bags if the need arises. It’s perfect for when you have an extra person tag along, or plans change, and you don’t want to share with your companion. Double sleeping bags only tend to come in a rectangular shape (also known as a square sleeping bag) as it is easier to use that way.
What About the Season Rating?
Something you really need to be thinking about is the season rating on your sleeping bag. This lets you know the kind of weather conditions you can comfortably use it in. To help you make the right choice, I have listed each of the season ratings below so that you can use them as a guide when choosing your double sleeping bag.
Season 1: This is for use in summer, as well as indoor camping. The material and inner padding are much thinner to prevent you from getting too hot and sweating in the night.
Season 2: This is ideal for the late spring or the early autumn. It is slightly warmer for those chilly nights, and will keep you comfortable while also ensuring that you aren’t drenched in sweat.
Season 3: This sleeping bag is for autumn and winter. It has been designed for cold nights that don’t have any frost. Ensuring you remain nice and warm; it is the perfect companion for the early winter.
Season 4: This particular sleeping bag is for winter, and can be used on frosty nights to keep the cold out. The inner material is nice and thick, trapping heat so that you aren’t left shivering in the cold.
Season 5: You don’t see this one often, but it is designed for extreme temperatures that go past freezing. Winter camping has nothing on this type of sleeping bag, and you are sure to beat all kinds of cold with it.
Things to Consider
When you go to buy a double sleeping bag, there are a few things you should be looking at before you commit. You deserve a sleeping bag that is both warm and comfortable, so make sure you look through each of your options carefully and check they have the features you want. Here are my top considerations for sleeping bags.
The Temperature Rating
This is different from the season rating because it specifically refers to the kind of temperature that it can withstand. It may also be referred to as a comfort rating, but they are the same thing. It will be printed on the sleeping back sack for easy reading. You will find that there are two temperatures listed; comfort and extreme. The former of these is the best one to go by, and while the extreme temperature remains tolerable, you may not feel quite as warm.
The Inner Lining
The inner lining is usually gentle on the skin and soft to touch. Most commonly, it is made from polyester or nylon, but there are cotton and flannel linings out there as well. If you are looking at camping in cold conditions, I would not recommend cotton. This is because the inner lining will trap moisture and could leave you feeling rather uncomfortable.
The Outer Fabric
You will find that nylon ripstop and Dryloft materials are usually used for the outer fabric of a sleeping bag. The former of these is really tough material that will not rip or tear easily, while the latter is both water resistant and breathable. Some may even be made form a combination of the two, and each makes for fantastic sleeping bags.
Left- and Right-Hand Zips
This is quite a helpful little addition, and one we don’t often think about. It’s beneficial to have, and most sleeping bags will let you know what they are. All you need to remember is;
- Left Hand Zip for Righthanded People
- Right Hand Zip for Left-Handed People
Sleeping Bag Separation
Are you able to separate your double sleeping bag? Do you want to? It’s a feature that does need to be considered before you pick the model you want. You will be able to find a good selection of each, but being able to turn them into two separate sleeping bags can be exceptionally handy when you are off camping. I would always suggest strongly considering the ones that can separate as opposed to the ones that are stuck together.
This is where all of that comfortable and warm padding is located. There are loads of different fillings, ranging from synthetic materials to down. It all depends on the season of the sleeping bag, the kind of weight you want to lug around with you, and also how much you want to pay. A good example of this is that down is lighter than synthetics, but it is also a lot more expensive. Down is also best for winter and cold weather camping because of its heat retention.
I really like these because they are a brilliant security feature. Having pockets inside your double sleeping bag means that you can store your wallet, keys, and phone (as well as other valuables like cameras) safely. While they are mostly used in festivals, you can never be too careful, and I would always advise interior pockets just to make sure you have everything together while you sleep. No pockets? Store all your valuables at your feet, it works pretty well!
Hopefully, this guide has helped you to find the best double sleeping bag, especially since it is difficult to only pick one with such a wide range on the market. Whether you are looking for something cheap, or a double sleeping bag that you can take hiking with you, we are sure to have just what you have been searching for right here.
Before you know it, you and your loved one will be cuddled up and ready to brave the cold nights together – just remember to buy one that’s right for the season!
